& &POP3 The POP3 server is written in Tcl/Tk. If you don't have the language installed (it comes with many Linux servers these days), and aren't using the Windows .exe, then you can obtain binaries ActiveTcl 8.4 from www.activestate.com for many different platforms. To use the POP3 server: On MS Windows, run 'mmpop3.exe', or run 'mmpop3.tcl' with wish84.exe* On MacOS/Linux, run 'mmpop3.tcl' with wish84. If the POP3 screen doesn't start, email talvo@talvo.com and he'll try and help you figure out why, but it may take a little time, as he's an ignorant Windoze user and will have to get help from Tcl users on Linux/MacOS. Continued in AHELP POP3 2 & &POP3 2 So, hopefully you'll now have a window with several text boxes. Enter the MUSH host and port, and the name of your Mail Bot character (which should be MailBot, unless you changed it), and his password (which defaults to BotMail, but you should have changed it). Then select whether you want to use the system in mode A or B (see HELP MAILSERVERS2 for the difference), and click the 'Start POP3 Server' button. It should connect successfully. (If it doesn't, check that you yourself can successfully connect to the MUSH, and that your firewall isn't blocking the executable from connecting to the internet. Failing that, email talvo@talvo.com.) When it connects, and announces that the server is running, you should be able to connect (either to the host's IP, or to 'localhost' if it's on your computer) on port 110. (At present, you can't alter the port used, but 110 is the default, standard port for POP3 mail.) You should then be able to connect, using your character name and password, to download your mail. To stop the server, just click the 'Stop POP3 Server' button. It will disconnect from the MUSH, boot anyone currently logged in, and stop listening for new connections (not necessarily in that order). You can then alter the MUSH details if you wish, and start it running again as before. (Changing from config A to config B or vice-versa is not a problem, either, though may make mail suddenly inaccessible (or make it appear when it's "deleted"), so it's best to choose one setup and stick with it, if you can.) & POP3 & MAILSERVERS Talvo's +Mail System comes complete with a POP3 server, so you can read your +mails offline, and keep them saved on your computer for ever. The host for the POP3 server is: 127.0.0.1 The port for the POP3 server is: 110 Use your MUSH username and password as your POP3 login details. (If you tend to change your name a lot, you can use your dbref as the username - type 'think %#' without the quotes to see what it is.) Continued in HELP MAILSERVERS2 & MAILSERVERS2 The POP3 server has two possible configurations: in config A, trying to delete a message does nothing, and you must set your email client up so that it leaves a copy of the message on the server to prevent duplicate downloads. In config B, trying to delete a message via POP3 will not delete that message from the MUSH, but it will delete it from your POP3 inbox. When this config setting is used, you should only tell your client to leave a copy of the message on the server if you want to be able to download it again later via POP3. The POP3 server for this MUSH is using Config A. In both Config A and Config B, you cannot send +mail from a mail client, and must log into the game and use the +MAIL commands. For an explaination of how to check your +mail in Outlook Express 6, please see HELP POP3 OE6. & POP3 OE6 1. Open Outlook Express. Select "Accounts" from the "Tools" menu. 2. Click "Add", and then select "Mail" in the menu which appears. 3. Type in any display name, for example, "Talvo@Elendor", and click Next. 4. Type in your MUSH character name, or dbref (type 'think %#' at the MUSH to find out your dbref). Click Next. You will be told that that is not a valid email address - click Yes to use it anyway. 5. Select "POP3" in the pull-down menu at the top, and then set both the Incoming and Outgoing servers to HOST.MUSHNAME.COM, then click Next. 6. Enter your MUSH password. Click Next. 7. Click Finish. If the POP3 server is running in Config A, you must then: 8. Select the new account in the list, and click the "Properties" button. 9. Go into the "Advanced" tab, and tick the box which says "Leave a copy of messages on server". Do not tick either of the two boxes below, which tell it to delete the messages later. That's it! You should now be able to download your +mail via POP3.
