Only players who speak the language will be able to understand what you say. The following language commands are available to all players: +SPEAK, +TEACHERS, +LANGUAGES These commands are only available to admins, or to some players: +TEACH, +MAKETEACHER, +SETFLUENCY, +ADDLANG These functions are available in the language system: LANG() The language system uses these flags: LINGUIST, TEACHER See also: LANGUAGE FLUENCIES & +SPEAK +SPEAK [:]= This command allows you to speak in different languages. Depending on how fluently you speak the language, and on how well the people hearing you speak know it, some or all parts of the message may be elided. Normally, when you use +Speak, you speak with your actual fluency in the language. If you wish to feign a lower ability, you can give a to speak in (see HELP LANGUAGE FLUENCIES). If starts with a :, ; or | it will be posed, semiposed or emitted, respectively. Only text within "quote marks" is spoken in the language; everything else is left unchanged. See also: LANGUAGES & +TEACHERS +TEACHERS This command lists all the players on the game who are registered as teachers and who are able to teach you a language. Note that the teachers listed will not necessarily know or be fluent in every language. See also: +MAKETEACHER & +LANGUAGES +LANGUAGES [] +LANGUAGES/ALL This command lists all the languages you know, and your approximate fluency in each. Admins can specify a to see the languages he knows, as well as his exact fluency in each. If the /all switch is given, all languages in the system are shown. See also+ SETFLUENCY & +TEACH +TEACH = This command can be used by registered teachers to teach to . Players can only be taught once every real-life week. In order to teach someone, you must be in the same location as them, and have at least Advanced fluency in the language, among other things. It takes time to learn a language; you'll probably need to be taught several times before you notice an increase in your fluency on +LANGUAGES, or before you start speaking or understanding things said in the language better. See also: +MAKETEACHER, +SETFLUENCY & +MAKETEACHER +MAKETEACHER This command, which can only be used by admins, toggles the teacher status of a given . Making someone a teacher allows them to use the +TEACH command, but it does not improve their skill in any language. & +SETFLUENCY +SETFLUENCY =/ This command sets the fluency with which speaks and understands to . For more information, see HELP LANGUAGE FLUENCIES. The command can only be used by admins. There is no way to delete a language at present, but using this command to give everyone a fluency of 0 will effectively delete it. See also: +TEACHERS, +MAKETEACHER, +LANGUAGES & LANG() LANG(,,,[,]) This function is designed for use in descriptions and other text to represent written language. is the written text; anything between quotation marks is taken as being written in the language. is the name of the language (as per +LANGUAGES) the text is written in. is how well the text is written; see HELP LANGUAGE FLUENCIES. is the name or dbref of the object trying to read the text. Should the text be too unclear, or the reader's ability too low, to understand the text, "UNINTELLIGIBLE " is shown instead, and defaults to "WRITING". For examples, see HELP LANG2. & LANG2 Example: @describe Book=A dusty book, bound in red leather. Written on the cover in a neat, flowing script are the words [lang("The Complete Works of Charles Dickens", English, 1000, %#, TEXT)] Someone who speaks no English would see, when looking at the book: A dusty book, bound in red leather. Written on the cover in a neat, flowing script are the words "" Someone who speaks a very small amount of English would see, in place of , the string . And someone with a slightly higher fluency in the language may see something along the lines of "The ... ... of Charles ...". & LINGUIST Flag: LINGUIST (all types) This flag, when set on an object, allows it to understand everything, in any language, said with the +speak command. It's intended for players or things which are logging a RP, so the log is complete. See also: LANGUAGES & TEACHER Flag: TEACHER (players) Players set with this flag are registered teachers, and can use the +teach command. This flag should not be set or cleared directly; instead, the +MAKETEACHER command should be used. See also: LANGUAGES, +TEACHERS & LANGUAGE FLUENCIES There are nine levels of fluency in the language system: None (0), Basic (1-100), Elementary (101-200), Intermediate (201-300), Conversational (301-400), Advanced (401-500), Proficient (501-600), Nearly Fluent (601-700), and Fluent (701-1000). The more fluent you are in any given language, the better you'll be able to speak it, and the better you can understand others who are speaking it. The argument to +SPEAK expects one of the word levels (or an abbreviation of it). +SETFLUENCY, and the argument to LANG(), expect a number between 0 and 1000, with 0 being no fluency whatsoever, and 800 and above being perfectly fluent. & +ADDLANG +ADDLANG This admin-only command adds a new language to the language system. After this is done, it is necessary to use +SETFLUENCY to give at least one person the ability to speak the language, before it can be used. & +DELLANG This wizard-only command deletes a language from the language system completely, including removing all player fluencies in the language. It cannot be undone; use with caution. & LANGUAGE CHANGES & LANGUAGE 1.3 Version 1.3 - October 12 2008 * Added +dellang.
